iPhone's here !!!

Just couldnt resist but post this. It truly was a mind blowing experience !! To see it on the web pages is a great experience, but to actually hold it in your hands is unimaginably greater an experience than that !! I almost bought it, but sanity prevailed and I decided to wait at least a week more 😀

Iphone and me !! :-)

I spent quite a long time with it, never even bothering to see who was standing in the queue behind me (if any). I hope to write an “unbiased” first hand experience, here soon. But for now let me relish the excitement !! 🙂

PS: The picture was taken and sent through an iphone too, if there is anyone who really want to explore the camera capabilities of it 🙂 hehe.

Syracuse Burning!!

It looks as though Sun seems to have taken a liking towards Syracuse by refusing to set even after 9:30 in the evening, and the temperature soaring upto 97F!! Quite ironically, I did wish for a hot summer, when it snowed endlessly, extending all the way upto April and when the spring which I was looking forward to (to complete the cycle of seasons ) never came. Weather simply can’t hit anymore extremes in this city, going from (-10F) to 100F in just two months. I’ve even come to realise that summer can make you as lazy as winter can, the difference being that in winter I never felt like leaving my house, whereas in summer I never feel like leaving my office room :D. It is expected to remain this way till the second week of July and then I hope the rains come back.

And, finally managed to get my hands on “My Name is Red” by Orhan Pamuk . I had been hearing quite a lot about this book lately and hence decided to buy it blindly without even bothering to read through the first few pages, like I usually do. In fact I started reading it too, putting aside August Frost that still has a bookmark on page 100. Although a wonderful narrative, describing each day in August’s life in the most detailed fashion, August Frost dragged a little too much in between, refusing to move any further from introducing the characters, even after the 100th page. All it talked till now, was about August (and his “fantasies”), his deli shop describing even the flavor of cheese he chose every single day (and iterations always led to nausea 😉 ), and the rest of the characters surrounding his life. But I must admit that all of them have been introduced in a manner such that the reader would know every single characteristic of each one of them. It does require a huge amount of talent (and of course patience) to accomplish that!!

Coming back to the new book in my life, I was infact caught offguard reading the title of the first chapter – “I am a corpse”. At the onset, I liked the way he introduced his characters, each narrating their own parts, themselves and the story unfolding itself through these independent narrations. This I felt is rather unique and hence interesting. It is indeed a gripping book, so much that I have to forcefully let myself keep it aside every night, for the fear of waking up late to work (I guess its time for me to buy this 😉 ). Also, the style of writing reminded me of one of my favorites – The Confessions of a Thug . Will let you know more about it once I crack its mystery 🙂

For now, let me go out and find myself an AC Duct to stand under. Even the heat of the laptop is making me sweat profusely !! 🙂 he he.

Hope…

Look unto infinity....

“Remember that hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

It keeps you going… it lets you walk on every road, out of an open ocean of possibilities, that you take, because in the end, you know there is that “hope” waiting for you….

Trail....

But you always leave a trail behind…. And at times it catches up with you…

The D-day – June 29th.

Ever since its launch in January 2007, as a new year gift from Apple, iPhone has gone through a myriad of controversies and analyses, merely due to the revolution that it was bound to create. First came the famous royalty case with Cisco Systems for its very name. Then came the debates over the pricing (famous being the Steve Balmer’s laugh, when asked about iphone), the vulnerability of the screen and the multitouch and ofcourse the third party application usage. Its hard to say if Apple has “survived” it all, yet. But things do look promising, esp. with the extended battery life and the glass display surface . Perhaps all these will become clearer on June 29th, the day when they launch it. :-).

But the reason why I started this post was not entirely to talk about what could be gathered through a simple search on google. iPhone holds a special place in my heart for yet another reason, apart from the fact that I always have an affinity towards the products from Apple. And it is this 🙂

Snippets of slides from my presentation - Oct 2006
(The image is slightly distorted and unclear, since I used MS Paint to put this together. Irony intended ;-))

This is a collage of two slides from a presentation I made back in Oct 2006 on Mobile OS in one of my courses. To add a little spice into the otherwise obvious presentation, I decided to include this as a “possibility” or rather a “wish” that I had. Well, I didnt get laughed at, back then, perhaps due to courtesy reasons. But you sure could imagine my reaction when I saw this , three months later. :-). It did look a little too different from the prototypes I managed to pull out of a Google Image search, but I believe I do deserve to possess an iPhone, just for this 😀

A confession….

Wise men from the mountains say, you don’t realise that you love someone until you lose her for sometime, be it a few hours or a couple of months or forever. Although I tried to keep myself aware of this in every possible manner, somehow along the way, I faltered. We have had a long long association dating back to Jan 2004, when I first got introduced to her. Since then she listened to every word I told her. Sometimes I poured out my frustrations, some other times they were “words of wisdom” or simply snapshots of things I see around me. I have ignored her many-a-times, even to the extend that I never saw her for 2 whole months. Still she stuck on. I took her for granted wherever I went and whatever I did. I always had the belief that she would be with me all throughout. The belief turned into a “confidence” and that went soaring high, beyond my reach….

Then it happened. I lost contact with her for a few hours, yesterday. My world came crashing down. I felt as though I lost her. My mind went blank for a while, when I frantically tried to get back in touch with her. Every minute seemed like a day and the wait was long. Finally, she came back at 2:00 am in the morning.

And

I realised Im in love …. with my blog !! 😀 I promised myself that I would never take her for granted again and hence decided to take a backup of everything I told her !! 😉

Sometimes monotony can be interesting too….

The past one month has been just the same everyday – daytimes in the lab, evenings on the tennis courts, and then sleeping off reading a book or watching a movie. On the weekends it has all been about waking up late into the afternoon, sitting up with a book or a movie till its evening and then back to playing… The routine continued. And perhaps, this would be my routine till the classes resumed in August. With occasional trips planned to New York and maybe to watch the Ozzfest (something I have been looking forward to, very much), things dont seem to be changing in any possible manner. But somehow, I have not started to get bored of this monotony so far, and thats quite unlike me. I guess some of the breaks in between keep me unaware of the thoughts of boredom, like the guitar musical I listened to, at my friends place over the weekend. What was interesting about it was the fact that, this friend of mine, who was of a non-indian origin was actually playing hindustani music on the guitars!! That left me spellbound for a while!! Amazing, the way they seem interested in our music, exactly the way Indian people seem “more” interested in western music, these days (Well proverbs can be true after all ;-)) In fact that even rekindled a desire to find out if there is anything left out of the tiny bit of karnatic music I learned as a child…. 🙂

Well, on other news, started reading August Frost (well reached just 40 pages so far though). At the onset, it looks like a great book – simple yet elegant style of writing. Will post more as soon as I finish reading. I hope to by the end of this week.

And

Im looking forward to getting my hands on Black Rain , the new album by Ozzy Osbourne. Some of the songs look particularly interesting like – I don’t wanna stop, Black Rain (A tribute to Iraq victims, as I hear – a modifed version of warpigs) , Countdown has begun and Here for you.

Countdown

I remember mentioning this book a year ago , but somehow never managed to finish it then. It could have been the seriousness of the subject, or the yearn to read a fiction, that kept me off it, back then. I had decided to bring it along with me, partly due to the small size of it (106 pages) and the consequent gain in space as opposed to carrying the Hitchhiker guide to the Galaxy. 😉 It was found deep under the pile of books I managed to “gather” over the last one year. And I decided to give it a try.

Indeed, it was a refreshing break from the American and Irish authors I had been reading ever since I got here. Finally I read a book full of complete sentences in English – funny, but true (And the non-indian authors call themselves the jargons of “english” literature !! he he). Sometimes, the overdose of native languages in the Irish and American books, kills the joy of reading the book. This is true with some of the Indian authors too, like the “God of small things”. Having said that I wouldn’t deny that fact that I enjoyed reading books such as, Angela’s Ashes, one of my first books written by an Irish author, for atleast the first half of it. But things got a little boring and monotonous by the time I reached its end and thats probably the reason I decided not to buy its “sequel” – T’is.

Something that got me glued to Countdown was the peculiar fast pace that it had. Filled with facts and reality, Amitav Ghosh talked about the aftermath of the nuclear tests in India, back in 1998. I know its outdated and hence irrelevant due to the stream of events that happened at the wake of the millennium, but the fact that everything written in the book was first-hand information still makes it a good read. What is more amazing was that he actually travelled to the place where the tests happened, talked to the people, and wrote the book as he travelled. By the time he got back, he had his book ready. But in the few months that he spent with the “topic”, he managed to talk to quite a few interesting people – such as George Fernandes, the then-defense minister of India, and that has made the book different. Perhaps it was his journalist’s approach towards writing which made it possible. 106 pages of pure facts and thoughts, would no way be achievable by any of the foreign writers, in my view, who tend to sway a lot in between, and that spoils the charm. Hence this surely is a book to read, if someday you would want to turn a little serious and try your hands on some serious matters… 🙂

More in stock, a couple of them I picked up from a sale in the book store at my college – August Frost by Monique Roffey and Tennants Rocks by Steve McGiffen, and the pile keeps growing…..

PC Guy

Couldnt help but post this. Its rather old, but relevant esp. when there was a reference to it at the D5 conference which saw the “historic” reunion between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Here is the transcript of what happened after that 🙂 – Subtle slanders but overall, a very nice talk.

Also, things to look out for – Microsoft Surface , a highly exaggerated *concept* !!

And of course, an article on Apple’s answer to it esp. for its last paragraph – “Our bet is that Steve Jobs won’t spill the beans on Apple’s multi-touch efforts at the D Conference today — he’ll just show off the iPhone and leave it at that. But make no mistake: Apple has similar technology in its development queue. But in Apple’s case, we won’t see it as a demo. It will come in actual products you can buy.” 🙂

And oh, by the way, it rained two days after I wished it did !! Its all cats and dogs now. 😀

June 1st

With a bag on my back, I boarded my bus.. The bus which took me to school in Time… Those were the lines in one of my poems, I wrote as a kid. The sight of June 1st popping up on my calendar today reminded me of just that. The first day of school, all excited, with everything new – new class, new books, new shoes and even a new umbrella. Somehow June 1st was always the day when monsoon first hit the coast of Kerala. It came lashing down from beneath those dark clouds, bang on at 6:30 (am), as I got ready to leave for school. And by the time I got there, I used to find myself drenched and dripping. An assembly in class, a pacific ocean (as we called it) in the football ground, dark rickety buses with “flying” shutters, and filled up puddles that splashed a bounty at the “fellow” walker’s dress, were all memories that flew in, at the very thought of June 1st. It could be for this reason that rains hold a very special place in my heart. In fact ever since I left school, I never bought myself an umbrella. I always preferred to walk in rain, be it to college or to work.

I wish it rains today, just to relive a minuscule fraction of those moments…….
